Profile of Founder Jeffrey Ang
Jeffrey (b. 1959), received his formal art training at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in the early 80s where he studied both western art (fine arts) as well as graphic design. Jeffrey (or ‘Jeff’ as he prefers to be called) has a Bachelor's degree (multimedia design) from Curtin University of Technology, Australia and is prolific in traditional art media and equally at ease with digital graphic design – typography, logo design, brochures, posters and editorial layouts for books and magazines.
Jeff started his career in a major publishing house as a designer for Silver Kris, the inflight magazine of Singapore Airlines. He is immensely grateful to his then-mentor for the strict design discipline acquired that went on to shape his career in graphic design and editorial work.
At the age of 28, Jeff founded his own design consultancy with his wife Ching, and serviced clients that included among others, Diners Club, Singapore Polytechnic, Crest Christian Bookstore, and MPH Magazines. After selling off the business, Jeff continued to hone his creative skills as art director for several local and regional titles including Frequent Traveller, Baby Plus, Motherhood, Motoring, Asia Travel Trade and Pregnancy Plus. Jeff was also art director for one of Singapore’s leading women’s fashion title Female as well as Torque, a magazine for motoring enthusiasts.
After a brief stint as a book designer at Periplus, subsidiary of international book publisher Tuttle Publishing, Jeff joined National Heritage Board as senior designer and worked closely with curators and exhibition designers from National Museum (previously known as Singapore History Museum), Asian Civilizations Museum (ACM), and the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), conceptualizing, planning and putting together museum exhibitions including the highly acclaimed blockbuster “Eternal Egypt: Treasures from the British Museum” at ACM (1999).
After an extensive 18 years of professional experience in the design and creative industries, Jeff answered the call to teach and to share his broad knowledge and experience with young aspiring students at the School of Design, Temasek Polytechnic.
Jeff served as faculty staff for 15 years and held various positions and appointments including senior lecturer, character and leadership associate, and head of Foundation Studies department. Jeff, who also has a Masters degree in professional counselling, served concurrently as senior lecturer and school-based counsellor in the polytechnic for nine years.
Jeff led two of his final year students to clinch the most coveted prize in an international design competition - the D&AD Yellow Pencil and the Student of the Year Award in 2008. He served as judge cum invigilator for World Skills Singapore 2014, Graphic Design Technology.
Apart from his core interest in art and design, Jeff is an avid jazz music fan. In his spare time, he listens to his favourite swing, Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms, as well as funk, soul and R&B music.
Jeff is happily married to his lovely wife Ching, who in his opinion is ‘the best cook in the world’ and they have two beautiful children Michelle, 26, and Ben, 20. He enjoys jogging, swimming, cycling, window shopping. His favourite food? You’ll have to come meet him to find out!
